The Science of Energy: Why Horses Respond to What We Feel, Not Just What We Do
If you have spent any time around horses, you have probably experienced it.
You walk into the arena feeling rushed, frustrated or distracted, and your horse seems unsettled before you have even touched the lead rope.
On another day, you arrive calm, focused and grounded, and that same horse is relaxed, curious and more willing to connect.
Many people call this “energy.”
But what does science actually tell us?
Energy Is More Than a Feeling
When people talk about energy, they are often referring to the overall state they bring into a situation. While the word “energy” can sound mysterious, much of what horses respond to has very real biological explanations.
Every emotion we experience creates changes throughout our body.
Our breathing changes.
Our heart rate changes.
Our muscle tension changes.
Our posture changes.
Our facial expressions change.
Our movement changes.
Even when we are trying to hide how we feel, our body is still communicating.
Humans may miss these subtle signals.
Horses often do not.
Horses Are Masters of Observation
As prey animals, horses have survived for thousands of years by noticing the smallest changes in their surroundings.
A slight shift in body posture.
A change in muscle tension.
The direction of someone’s eyes.
The speed of movement.
The rhythm of breathing.
These small details help horses answer one very important question:
“Am I safe?”
Because their survival has always depended on noticing body language and changes in the environment, horses are incredibly sensitive to non-verbal communication.

Your Nervous System Speaks Before You Do
Our emotional state influences far more than our thoughts.
When we are stressed, our sympathetic nervous system activates the fight, flight or freeze response.
Our breathing may become shallow.
Our muscles may tighten.
Our movements may become quicker or more rigid.
Our attention may narrow.
Even if we are smiling or saying that everything is fine, our body may be communicating tension or uncertainty.
When we are calm and regulated, our nervous system supports slower breathing, softer posture, clearer thinking and more intentional movement.
Horses are sensitive to these changes.
They are not reading our minds.
They are responding to the information our bodies are giving them.
Horses Respond to Congruence
Horses do not care about job titles, education or status.
They respond to what is happening in the moment.
If our words, body language and intention do not match, the horse may become uncertain, distracted or hesitant.
For example, we may ask a horse to move forward while leaning backward, holding tension in our body or sending mixed signals through the lead rope.
The horse is then receiving several different messages at once.
When our intention, posture, movement and timing become clearer, the horse is more likely to understand what is being asked.
This is not about controlling the horse.
It is about improving our communication.
The Role of Heart Rate and Calm Presence
Researchers continue to study how humans and horses influence one another during interaction.
Some studies have explored heart rate, heart rate variability, stress responses and changes in behaviour during human-horse contact.
This area of research is still developing, and it is important not to make claims beyond what the evidence supports.
What we do know is that breathing, posture, muscle tension, movement and emotional regulation all affect how we interact with horses.
A calm and regulated person is more likely to move clearly, use appropriate pressure, notice the horse’s responses and adjust when needed.
This creates a safer and more understandable interaction for both the person and the horse.
Why Self-Regulation Matters
For facilitators, regulation is essential.
When we enter the arena feeling rushed or overwhelmed, we may miss important information.
We may apply too much pressure.
We may react too quickly.
We may fail to notice when the horse needs space, time or a clearer direction.
When we regulate ourselves, we are better able to observe, respond and make thoughtful decisions.
We become more aware of our breathing, body position, timing and use of pressure and release.
The horse benefits because the interaction becomes more predictable, respectful and clear.
This Is Why Facilitation Matters
At Equine Connection, we do not teach people to force horses to complete a task.
We teach people to become more aware of how they communicate.
That includes awareness of body language, movement, timing, boundaries, pressure, release and emotional regulation.
When people change the way they communicate, horses may respond differently because the information they are receiving has changed.
That is not magic.
It is communication.
It is awareness.
It is relationship.
And it is one of the reasons Equine Assisted Learning can create insights that are difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom.
The Real Power of Energy
Perhaps the clearest way to understand “energy” is as the complete picture of what our body is communicating in each moment.
Our breathing.
Our posture.
Our pace.
Our tension.
Our focus.
Our intention.
Our emotional regulation.
Horses are constantly observing this information while also communicating through their own movement, posture, breathing and behaviour.
The goal is not to assume that every horse response has a hidden meaning.
The goal is to pay attention.
What changed?
What information did the horse receive?
Was the request clear?
Was there too much pressure?
Was the person regulated and present?
Did the horse need more space or time?
These questions allow the learning to stay grounded in observation rather than assumption.
The horse does not need to symbolize anything.
The interaction itself provides the learning.
As we become more aware of how we communicate, we gain the ability to make clearer and more intentional choices with horses, with our teams, with our families and in everyday life.
